ODYSSEUS' DECISION

The great man turns his back on the island.
Now he will not die in paradise
nor hear again
the lutes of paradise among the olive trees,
by the clear pools under the cypresses. Time
begins now, in which he hears again
that pulse which is the narrative
sea, at dawn when its pull is stongest.
What has brought us here
will lead us away; our ship
sways in the tined harbor water.
Now the spell is ended.
Give him back his life,
sea that can only move forward.


LA DECISIÓN DE ULISES

El gran hombre se aleja de la isla.
Ahora no morirá en el paraíso
ni oirá
las músicas del paraíso en los olivares,
junto a limpios estanques bajo los cipreses. El tiempo
comienza ahora, en que escucha de nuevo
ese pulso que es el mar narrativo
al amanecer cuando su su impulso es más fuerte.
Lo que nos ha traído aquí
es lo que no alejará. Nuestro barco
se desliza en el agua encajonada del puerto.
Ahora ha terminado el hechizo.
Devuélvale su vida
el mar que sólo puede avanzar y avanzar.
